The Interview

The detective went to the door first, alone, badge out, and asked the parents for five minutes before the interview began — enough time, it turned out, for everything to unravel in a driveway instead of a living room.

Renee saw the unmarked car before she reached the porch. She didn't run. I think, looking back, some part of her had been waiting for this exact moment for longer than any of us realized, the way you wait for a debt you always knew would eventually come due.

"I haven't done anything you can actually prove," she said to the detective, calm in a way that unsettled me more than any amount of yelling could have. "One video. One angry morning. That's what you have."

"We have Carol Henderson too," Ryan said, stepping out of the car despite the detective's earlier instructions to stay back. "And a deleted-footage timeline that's going to be very hard to explain as 'one angry morning.'"

Something shifted in Renee's expression then — not guilt, exactly, but a kind of tired recalculation, like a person realizing a hand they'd been confident in had just been called.

"You have no idea how many houses like this I've walked into," she said, quiet enough that I almost missed it, and cold enough that I've thought about it every day since. "You think this is about Nora. It was never really about Nora."

The detective took her in for questioning that afternoon on an outstanding matter tied to the assault report. She wasn't formally arrested yet — that would take another week of building the case properly — but she never got the chance to meet those two children, and the family, once told the truth, canceled the position entirely.

What Renee had said in that driveway stayed with all three of us the whole drive home, and none of us said it out loud, but I think we were all wondering the exact same thing.

How many houses, before ours.
