The Reference Check

It took Ryan's lawyer two days to track down a working phone number for the Hendersons, and it took Carol Henderson exactly one sentence to confirm what none of us had wanted to say out loud yet.

"I've been waiting four years for someone to call me about that woman."

Carol's daughter had been three when Renee worked for them — old enough, barely, to eventually tell her mother about a woman who screamed when nobody else was home and once left a mark on her arm that Carol had photographed but never reported, because Renee had already resigned by the time she found the courage to confront her, and a lawyer friend had warned Carol that without more evidence, a complaint would just become a costly, humiliating he-said-she-said with no real outcome.

"I told myself I'd gotten her away from my daughter, and that was enough," Carol said, her voice tight even over the phone. "I never thought about the fact that she'd just go find someone else's daughter next."

With Carol's account added to Ryan's growing file, the family lawyer sounded, for the first time since this began, genuinely optimistic.

"A documented pattern changes everything," she told us. "One incident is easy for a defense attorney to spin as an isolated bad moment. Two incidents, four years apart, with matching details, is something else entirely."

That optimism lasted exactly until the following afternoon, when Renee's own attorney sent over his opening position for the custody proceedings — and it wasn't a denial.

It was a counterattack, built entirely around Ryan's flight schedule, arguing that a father who traveled as much as he did had effectively abandoned his parental responsibilities to a stepmother he'd left unsupported and overwhelmed — and that any reasonable custody arrangement needed to weigh his absence just as heavily as anything Renee may or may not have done in it.
