Eleanor's Move

Claire let her up mostly out of exhaustion.

Eleanor sat at the small kitchen table like she'd never sat at a table that wasn't set by someone else, and for a long moment she didn't say anything at all — just looked around the apartment the way she'd looked at Mia the first night, cataloguing, absorbing, recalibrating something Claire couldn't name.

"I didn't authorize that wire transfer," Eleanor finally said. "I want you to understand that before anything else. My signature was on it because Victor Ashford has had access to my authorization stamp since before my husband died — a courtesy I extended a man I thought was family, and which I am only now understanding he has spent thirty years quietly abusing."

"Why would he pay me to disappear? He didn't even know me."

"He didn't need to know you. He needed Daniel unmarried, unattached, and easy to steer for exactly as long as it took to finalize a merger that would have handed Ashford Capital forty percent of this company." Eleanor's mouth thinned. "I told you to leave because I believed the lie he handed me — that Daniel had cold feet and needed an exit. I have spent seven years being ashamed of a decision I made on bad information from a man I trusted more than my own son. That doesn't undo the damage. But it means Victor built this entire blackmail on a lie he told himself, and lies like that have paperwork trails, if you know where his assistant used to work before mine."

Claire studied her for a long moment. "Why help me now? Really."

"Because he tried to use my grandchild as leverage in a boardroom," Eleanor said, and for the first time, something genuinely dangerous moved behind her eyes. "I have made a great many mistakes where that little girl is concerned. I do not intend to make that one."

The plan, once Eleanor laid it out, was simple and terrifying in equal measure: the shareholder vote in eleven days wasn't just for Daniel's appointment anymore. Eleanor intended to bring the wire transfer records, the assistant's testimony, and Claire herself into the room, publicly, before Victor could spin the story any further in the press.

"I won't ask you to do this if you're not ready," Eleanor said. "But I think you're the only person in that room he never planned for."

Claire didn't sleep well that night either. But for the first time in seven years, it wasn't fear keeping her awake.

It was the beginning of a plan.

The next morning, someone Claire had never met sent Victor Ashford a photograph of the three of them leaving her building together.
