The Second Container

The second bag, once the dive team brought it up, held a set of encrypted external hard drives sealed in waterproof plastic — the evidence Derek had apparently been trying to destroy before he could run.

"Your ex-wife found his real books three days ago," Novak explained, keeping his voice low so Ellie wouldn't catch every word. "He's been running a fraud scheme out of Chicago for years, laundering client money through fake developments. When she found the ledgers, she planned to go to the DA. He couldn't let that happen."

He held up a small evidence bag with a silver thumb drive inside it. "This was hidden in a headband seam. Your daughter's."

I looked down at Ellie. Her eyes were steady in a way that undid me more than tears would have. "Mommy told me to hide it before he saw," she said softly. "So he couldn't take her proof away."

Novak crouched to Ellie's level, his expression gentler now. "You saved the whole case, kiddo." Then he straightened, and something in his posture shifted back to business. "There's one more thing, Mr. Reid. We ran Derek Kane's prints while you were with the paramedics. Kane isn't his real name. Six years ago, in another state, a man matching his description was investigated after his stepson drowned in a backyard pool. Case went nowhere — the family moved, the mother recanted, and he resurfaced two states over with a new name and a real estate license."

The ground seemed to tilt under me. "This wasn't the first pool," I said.

Novak's silence was answer enough.
