The Door

Vivian must have heard something in the detective's voicemail before my dad ever played it out loud in the kitchen, because by the time he found her, she was already upstairs with a suitcase half packed and my backpack sitting open on my bed.

"We're going to your sister's for a few days," she told me too brightly, zipping my backpack closed without asking what I wanted in it. "Just a little trip while your dad sorts some things out."

"Vivian." My dad's voice from the doorway had a shape in it I'd never heard before. "Detective Okafor called. About Kate's accident."

Her hands stopped on the zipper.

For one long moment nobody in the hallway moved, my dad blocking the top of the stairs, Vivian holding my backpack like it was the only thing left she could still control, and me standing between both of them the way I'd been standing between two versions of my life since the morning she first asked me to call her Mom.

"You don't understand what she was going to do to us," Vivian said quietly, and it took me a second to realize she meant my mother, not me. "She was going to take everything. The house, the business, Josie. Everything Adam and I had already started building."

My dad's face went the color of the wall behind him.

"Adam," Vivian said, and her voice had gone thin and pleading in a way I'd never once heard it, "I need you to let me leave with her right now."
